Mason's Transformations - Chapter 4

Mason’s Transformations
A First Meal

It was only after Mason had opened his eyes, that the room around him had come into focus again. The metal chair and white room were gone, replaced by the warm wooden cabin and Mason's fluffy wool bed. He looked around the room and found it was indeed the very same place where he had fallen asleep the night before. He could hear Adam walking around the outside of the room, and raised up on all fours when he neared the doors. But Adam would pass his room and make his way upstairs and back down again. It was only after the third time Adam passed his door, that Mason lay back down on his bed and decided that Adam was not going to come inside and greet him good morning.

Instead Mason turned his attention to what Adam had said the night before. Those words were still cutting into him like rope and squeezed tighter with each breath. "Not human anymore..." Mason trailed off, feeling somewhat short of breath. It was just like his dream, the man in the white labcoat had said that his identity was going to be "wiped away." Mason shivered at the thought of these similar comments and tried to dismiss them from his mind. After all, Mason knew that Adam couldn't have any relation to the man in the white labcoat. Adam was too good to him, and Mason felt no hostility from Adam, just the same. It was also clear to Mason, that he still had the consciousness of being human once, and that he remained stuck in his form now. On the outside, he could only speak and act like a dog, but on the inside, his mind was very clearly intact. It was as if two personas had been fused together and were acting independently. After all, Mason could not resist lapping up all the water from the night prior. It was as if Mason had been integrated with canine instincts that takeover whenever he was confronted with certain situations...

However, Mason didn't have time to finish his thought. When Adam finally opened Mason's door, he brought with him two metal bowls. The room was immediately filled with the scent of meat. Mason's head turned from his thoughts to the contents of the bacon, eggs, and ham he immediately recognized in one bowl. The other was hard to tell, but it was much less appetizing to Mason. Adam slowly made his way over to where Mason was now sitting. And he stopped, orbiting the two bowls slightly over Mason's head. Adam said, "Boy, I want you to be eating this from now on." As he placed a bowl of dogfood on the floor next to Mason's paw. Mason didn't budge, but his craving for the bowl in Adam's hand had caused him to drool from both corners of his mouth. "And you're really not supposed to eat people food..." Adam trailed off. "But, if you finish both bowls of food, I might consider feeding you both from now on!" and with that said, he lowered the appetizing bowl of food to the floor. Only, the bowl got about halfway before Mason's head was inside it, devouring the contents without a second thought. By the time the bowl had reached the ground, it was already half empty and Adam had shuffled out of the room to get a bowl of water.

It didn't take long for Mason to finish off the bowl of food and once again, he found himself licking the edges of the bowl. His chest beat with the very same feeling of primal dominance and Adam walked in with another bowl of water. Mason moved to lap some of it up. "Good boy!" Adam said, as Mason began to lick his chops. He could still taste bacon and savored every second. But, he caught another smell now, a more natural earthly smell that was at first overpowered by the bacon, eggs, and ham. Now, Mason realized he had to eat the contents of the other bowl, too. With a few steps, he made his way from Adam over the first bowl of food and found a muddy wet/dry combination of dog food. It didn't smell very appetizing to Mason, but he dipped his head into the dish and lapped up a few kibbles. To his surprise, it wasn't bad at all. It had tasted like very coarse ground beef, and it wasn't bad. Certainly not as good as the bacon and ham, but definitely edible. Mason felt another pat on his head as he continued to eat the dog food, and again ended his meal licking the sides, not missing any morsel that might have evaded his tongue until now.

Adam, once again, dissappeared from the room to fetch something and Mason slowly made his way over to the water dish. Mason felt good, as he finished off the water. So good, that he didn't notice Adam had retreated upstairs. So good, that he didn't notice Adam had returned with something. So good, that when Mason looked up, his good feeling went away immediately and he turned into a raging growling animal. Mason had immediately seen it, the nose that was peering around the corner, sniffing the air for any sign of hostility. And he finally caught the scent of the other pup, it was attached to the chain-end of Adam's leash. And it was very frightened of Mason. Mason growled at it, and felt somewhat jealous that the pup was on Adam's leash. With a short tug, Adam pulled the new pup into the room and Mason growled even deeper. It was a growl that immediately turned into a whimper, because when Mason looked at the pup's full face. He had remembered that he had seen it once before...

"Mason..." said Adam. "I want you to meet Cruiser." At which, the new pup dropped a wet slobbering tongue out of it's mouth and smiled.
